So with the uefi bios on the asus boards that a few of us are running now overclocking safely couldn't be simpler. Here's a quick way to push your cpu harder while maintaining stability.

First hit delete a lot when your computer is booting to get into the bios. You should see this.


Go up and hit the Exit/Advanced Mode button in the upper right to see this popup. Click on Advanced Mode.


Mosey on over to the AI Tweaker tab and look for the "OC Tuner" button. Note in this screenshot I am already overclocked so your values will look different. You can see from this screenshot it chose an overclock of around 4.3ghz and I manually set the ram to a modest overclock from 1866mhz to 1921mhz.


Click "OK" on this popup.


Your motherboard will now automagically overclock your shit to a decent level and still give rock solid stability. I'll will update this if you want info on how to push farther, but I'm going out of town and disconnecting myself from the cyber world till next Monday. You don't even need professional training or an advanced degree in computer engineering!! (sorry Inno but I couldn't resist)

All this talk about computers has gotten me in the mood to go for an upgrade. I was thinking about waiting for ivy bridge cpu's to make their debut, but after reading some reviews I will probably go with the sandy bridge. The main reasons being that ivy bridge is a pretty incremental upgrade and doesn't overclock as well. I can overclock the shit out of an i5 and have it perform better than an ivy bridge based chip. I also decided to go for an i5 over an i7 because the differences are pretty minimal. Some extra l3 cache and hyperthreading support isn't that attractive. I'm might wait a bit until ivy bridge cpu's hit the shelves to drive down prices of the second gen i5's, but I'm not patient so we'll see how that works out. Getting the K version for the unlocked multiplier (of course).

As far as boards are concerned I am gonna go with an asus based off the Z68 chipset. The reason I wanted to go for the Z68 is because it allows both overclocking and the onboard graphics chip that is on the 2500 series i5's. The graphics chip on the cpu allows for offloading video transcoding from the main processor and should help with live streaming raids and other games and such. For RAM I'm going to try out GSkill just to get some variety. Over the past years I've used corsair, geil and mushkin but have heard good things about GSkill and want to give them a go. Going for 1866 for a little more speed.
