The joy of alcohol
04 May 2012 - 10:01 PM
Not sure if anyone else reads Slate regularly (I know Sobie does occasionally, but not sure about anyone else). I like it, and I suppose other folks should read it if they feel like it, but I don't really like it enough to go out and champion it, except for Troy Patterson. He's a tv/book/movie reviewer for them most of the time, but I don't really like his reviews. He trashed the pilot for Game of Thrones in an attempt to be witty and contrary and it *really* didn't go well.
But the man can write about booze. Having a bit of a buzz would help, as would being in kind of a Mad Men mood, but I can't read one of his booze columns without working up a pretty good thirst. Anyway, I figured I'd share in case other folks hadn't come across him. Here's one on Mint Juleps (http://www.slate.com..._cocktail_.html)and one on Shirley Temples and the more adult varieties thereof (http://www.slate.com...te_liqueur.html).
Enjoy your weekend. -
Not the way he wanted to end it

Wow. I like the Yankees well enough (we were always more Mets fans), but for whatever reason I never felt much more than "meh" about Rivera.
But, damn, that is not the way you want to see a HoF-level career end.

Wrath's adventures in new PC-land
25 April 2012 - 01:59 PM
I guess that's a little misleading because I'm actually planning on building it myself. MMO has been dragging its ass about coming out with a new consolidated suggested list, so I've been starting to read product reviews and check out websites that focus on this sort of thing. My current computer has been holding on like a champ considering I bought it refurbished for like $500 3 years ago (and it was a panic purchase because my old one had completely melted down) but my lag and fps has been consistently creeping up/down over the last couple months or so and its starting to have random things start to go wrong.
Not looking for anything tricky (I tried converting to Ubuntu at one point which was nifty in some ways, but was just too much of a pita overall) and it won't get used for anything that'll tax it more than gaming. I'm budgeting perhaps $1200-1300, give or take a bit. Definitely want an SSD. I've got some initial thoughts on components but I'm obviously posting because I'm interested in feedback. Probably the biggest question currently on my mind is whether I'd get noticeable mileage out of replacing the monitor. Currently using an old-ish Acer 24" monitor (H233H) which still seems ok.
Components I'm thinking of:
Mobo: ASRock Z68 Extreme 3
Graphics Card: Gigabyte Radeon 7950
CPU: Intel i5 2500k
RAM: Skill Sniper 1600MHZ 4GB (2)
HD: Samsung Spinpoint 1TB
PS: Seasonic M2II 650W (was thinking of this one, though Deceax noted that he'd only buy Antec ones and I've used X Finity ones in the past (was the best deal at the local place) and been happy with them) so I'm unusually flexible here.
Fan: Thermaltake Frio is what MMO champion says is the way to go, but honestly this will be a powerful enough machine that I won't be doing any serious overclocking (though I have played around with it in the past, especially when trying to get decent performance on demanding games) so I doubt I'll need something that powerful. On the other hand, its an extra $20 over a cheap one so perhaps its worth getting a powerful one since its not much more? Any suggestions for a really quiet fan?
SSD: Crucial M4 128GB (reviews are most impressive. Would be kinda nice to get a 256 but they get pricey kinda quickly)
Case: I kinda like the CoolerMasters but I haven't the faintest idea. It looks like its mostly aesthetics and the decent ones all have plenty of room for stuff. I do need to measure exactly how much room I've got to work with, just to be on the safe side. -
OotS

Anyone who reads OotS might find this amusing.
The Ultimate Campaign of Parodied D&D
sung (roughly) to the tune of The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny
Old Bozzok was hopping around
Greysky City like a big playground
When suddenly Haley burst from 'round back
And hit Bozzok with a sneak attack
Bozzok got pissed and got ready to tank
But didn't expect Belkar to flank
B opened up a can of Ranger-Fu
When a random kobold came out of the blue
But before Belkar's mom had a chance to grieve
They both got flattened by Roy's Great Cleave
B was gonna turn its head into something depraved
But the First-Level Commoner popped out of his grave
And took a crossbow out from under his hat
And blew Belkar away with a thwap-thwap-thwap
But he ran out of bolts and he ran away
Because Mr. Scruffy came to save the day
This is the Ultimate Campaign of Parodied D&D
Good guys, bad guys, Explosive Runes; as far as the eye can see
And only one rules the gate, I wonder who it will be
This is the Ultimate Campaign of Parodied D&D
Then Miko aimed a Smite at Belkar with great force
While Scruffy took a bite out of her horse
And then Miko prepared to complete her attack
But V shot a scortching ray into her back
And Belkar was injured, and trying to get steady
When the Commoner came back with a machete
But suddenly he was taken out of the fight
Because Durkon clobbered him with Thor's Might
Then he saw Sabine sneaking up from behind
And Haley reached for her bow which she just couldn't find
'Cause Nale stole it and he shot and he missed
And Miko deflected it with her fist
Then Belk jumped in the air and did a summersault
While Roy the fighter tried to pole vault
Onto the Zombie Dragon, but they collided unharmed
Then they both got hit by a Meteor Swarm
This is the Ultimate Campaign of Parodied D&D
Good guys, bad guys, Explosive Runes; as far as the eye can see
And only one rules the gate, I wonder who it will be
This is the Ultimate Campaign of Parodied D&D
Damned souls sang out, in a chorus castrated
As O'chul descended, his will unabated
He delivered a Smite, as blue as the sky
As hard as he could into Redcloak's eye
Then enemies all gathered to the beat of one drum
and the paladin sensed that his time had come
But before O'chul could breathe no more
he eviscerated the Shoeless God of War
Then Xykon the lich, and Redcloak the Priest
and the Darkness-Dwelling-Mind-Controlled-Unknown-Beast
With Thog and Therkla and Kubota, too
Tarquin and Crystal and Buggy Lou
Quar and the Fiend-Possessed, Evil Vaarsuvius
Trigak, Hilgya, every single Spartacus
all attacking in a wave as fast as they can
along with Baron Pineapple and Goblin Dan
With the momentum from O'Chul's fatality
They shipped Durkon home, posthumously
It was the bloodiest battle the world ever saw
With NPCs looking on in total awe.
The Battle raged on, epic levels achieved
'till just three remained, if that could be believed
The champions stood, Roy and Haley ascending,
and Elan, who got his happy ending.
This is the Ultimate Campaign of Parodied D&D
Good guys, bad guys, Explosive Runes; as far as the eye can see
And only one rules the gate, I wonder who it will be
This is the Ultimate Campaign of Parodied D&D
