So with the uefi bios on the asus boards that a few of us are running now overclocking safely couldn't be simpler. Here's a quick way to push your cpu harder while maintaining stability.

First hit delete a lot when your computer is booting to get into the bios. You should see this.

Go up and hit the Exit/Advanced Mode button in the upper right to see this popup. Click on Advanced Mode.

Mosey on over to the AI Tweaker tab and look for the "OC Tuner" button. Note in this screenshot I am already overclocked so your values will look different. You can see from this screenshot it chose an overclock of around 4.3ghz and I manually set the ram to a modest overclock from 1866mhz to 1921mhz.

Click "OK" on this popup.

Your motherboard will now automagically overclock your shit to a decent level and still give rock solid stability. I'll will update this if you want info on how to push farther, but I'm going out of town and disconnecting myself from the cyber world till next Monday. You don't even need professional training or an advanced degree in computer engineering!! (sorry Inno but I couldn't resist)

My computer has the exact same bios so I might try doing this on my 2550k i5.

Probably as easy as it gets as far as overclocking is concerned. If you want to stress test your cpu and memory after overclocking then download Prime95 and run it after you overclock to really stress your components and verify that the new clock speeds are stable. So far I have had 0 problems running at the clock speeds that were recommended by the motherboard.

So, I didn't even really change anything and when I did the stress test it got to test 3 and locked up my computer. Dafuq does that mean?

Means it was too aggressive. If you have the shitty stock heatsink you will probably have to scale it back some. Could you post a screenshot of the settings that it gave you when you did the automatic overclock? Either you need to bump down the base clock which is 103 in my ss below, the multiplier (mine is 42) or the ram speed. You can figure out what the speed will be by taking the base clock and multiplying it by the multiplier. So in my case 103mhz*42 = 4326mhz = 4.3ghz. These processors don't like their base clock turned up by much so if you still see some instability try keeping that at 100 with a 40x multiplier to run at a flat 4ghz.

To monitor temperatures I use a program called core temp which can be found here. Monitor the core temperature while running prime 95 and try and stay in the 50-60C range. Asus probably has a utility that you can use to monitor temps as well. The upper limit on temperatures is somewhere in the 90+ range, but you really don't want to be getting close to that.

Right now it's running at 86-88*F, and being liquid cooling I doubt it will ever overheat. Oh and while playing SC2 on Ultra at 1680x1050 it goes up to a whopping 107*F.

Hmm. Wonder what made it conk out, then. Was it a voltage thing?

Not sure, it came preclocked by the people that built it so either they fucked something up or IDK.

Nah doubt that they touched the voltage. You really only want to start fucking with voltages if you are going for like 4.8ghz+. It's possible the memory was crapping out if you are running it at a higher speed than rated. What speed did the auto-overclock set? I would try a base clock of 100 and a multiplier of 40x for starters.

Well my processor is BASED at 3.4GHz so putting at that is kinda dumb. Right now it's at 3.42GHz from what they OC'd it to.

OH and it's set at 103, and no clue how to check the multiplier.

?? 100mhz x 40 = 4.0ghz. Never said to take it down to 3.4. The multiplier is in the screenshot I posted above. Mine is set to 42.

Oh, well shit uh sec. I'll look then.

103 Frequency and the multiplier is set to auto.

If you have a liquid cooler on the CPU I would imagine the processor should be fine even pushed well past 4.0. My suspicion would be memory clocked too high.

I fucked around with the settings you suggested, and my comp kept freezing up. Wasn't overheating or anything, just randomly would stop and make the most annoying fucking sound ever. So I put it back to factory OC settings and I'm gonna just not bother.
