Still wouldn't call it 100% accurate, but some of the more interesting work I've seen regarding population info: http://wow.realmpop....us-drenden.html
You can do some neat (and probably useless) stuff with it too, like figure out that 73.6% of all level 85 female toons on the server are either Nelf > Human > Draenei > Belf (no one likes the ugly races!). Poor orc females and their 1.4%, no wonder Thrall was going after Jaina. If you want to feel like a special snowflake, roll an orc female mage, because there are only 4 of those on the server that are 85.
Or that out of the top 10 guilds by roster size, only one is in the top 48(!) on wowprogress (Insurrection at 10/11 respectively). Gives a whole new perspective about the motivations of the majority of people that play on the server. According to the site there are 6,508 level 85 horde and 13,295 alliance.

I'm surprised our guild has 209 members when I haven't seen more than 20 on at the same time in like a year.

Heh. Those poor female orc mages. I'm not sure which is worse. That there are only 4 level 85s on the server or that there are only 18 TOTAL on the server, including all levels. There are over 700 female belf paladins, by comparison.

Alts, people who've kinda disappeared but haven't been kicked yet for whatever reason, friends, etc.
The pop numbers are pretty inflated from that standpoint. Like Warlocks of the Sunspire are almost dead because of their lack of activity, but on paper they've got hundreds of members. Asylum having 500ish members back in BC doesn't seem so impressive now, but when you consider that it typically only allowed people to have, at most, 1 alt in the guild and was actively pruned to remove inactive members, the 150+ actual player members is pretty impressive.

Is that because of alts?
Yes, the data represents all characters, not individual accounts. For example I have 11 toons in Heresiarch (guess which one the 11th is!) so I'm padding our count. It's gathered by taking anyone who posts on an AH and then everyone in that person's guild (again not 100% accurate, but it would be horribly inefficient to trawl through armory or something like that). So unguilded people who never post on an AH aren't captured, but it's probably close enough to be a representative sample.

Yeah, can't imagine what guild chat is like in those 1,000 member guilds, think I would end up turning it off (apparently there are 4 on Drenden with +900, and 2 of them are Horde surprisingly enough). Even if everyone has 6-7 alts that's still a shitload of people.

Nah, use it for making raid groups for soloing stuff, but don't even do that much any more.

When I started, I was on an EU server and my guild had about 500+ members. There'd usually be about 50-60 members on at raid time. It was quite confusing at times with all the different languages... Back then though with 40 man raids, I bet there was some pretty clusterfucked guild chats lol
