So, I got it started again but this strikes me as a bad thing to fail, seeing as how the CPU kept shutting itself down immediately. Backing stuff up now.
I'm guessing the fan built directly into the motherboard is hard to replace. Hmm. When we were doing Ulduar? Spring of 2009? I got this cpu cheap (and refurbished) when we were working on Yogg.
Is this a death sign for my cpu or is this solvable?

Haven't tried but looks pretty well attached.
Hmm. On closer inspection, might be removable after all. I'll investigate further later tonight.

Unless you've got a laptop it should be. You've probably got an intel LGA775 socket so all you have to do is rotate the 4 fasteners 90 degrees and pull them up, then pull the heatsink up.
E: Also, you should just check to make sure it didn't get unplugged or jammed with dust.
