So, I was thinking the other day about word etymology and pronunciation, and, as many current and former NYC residents do, was pondering the great Houston vs Houston conundrum. In Manhattan, there's a fairly prominent street named Houston and of course there's the big city in Texas named Houston. The difference being that the street is pronounced "HOW-ston" while the city is pronounced "HEW-ston". So, the question is: which is wrong? After thinking about it for a while, it occurs to me that the word just has to be Dutch. I mean, just LOOK at it. So, if its Dutch, then the street is probably correct and poor Sam Houston was mispronouncing his name.

Yet this doesn't feel entirely right. Anyone know?

Internet says his ancestors were in Ireland at some point. Wonder if that affects anything.

Come see the lack of creative freedom inherent in the system! Help! Help! I'm being repressed!

Yea!

I quoted South Park: the Movie in guild the other day and no one got it.

Made me a little sad.

South Park is a horrible movie and thus no one should know of it. The movie I was referring to is Monty Python: The Search for the Holy Grail, where that line was first from.

King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water signifying by Divine Providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king!
Dennis: Listen. Strange women lying in ponds, distributing swords, is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony!
King Arthur: Be quiet!
Dennis: You can't expect to wield supreme power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
King Arthur: Shut up!
Dennis: I mean, if I went 'round saying I was an emperor, just because some moistened bink had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!
King Arthur: Shut up! Will you shut up?!
[Arthur grabs Dennis and shakes him.]
Dennis: Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system!

Shardik,

No, that line is just from Holy Grail. South Park may have stolen it at some point, but afaik it wasn't in the movie.

Re: South Park, I sang a few lines of Big Gay Al's "I'm Super!" in guild and people just thought I was being odd. Which was technically correct, but incomplete.

Most brilliant movie ever conceived by man. I believe that even today it should still be nominated and win at the various award ceremonies that are held in Hollywood (even though it is not an American movie).
