Ok don't knock it unless you've tried it, recently. They have changed a lot about the game to make it better since release. It's really a pretty decent game right now, probably one of the better MMOs out there.

I've been playing for 2-3 weeks now and I'm having a lot of fun with it.

Reasons to play this game
-Free to try (I say try because while it is free to play to level 80 you're going to want to upgrade subscription to $15 a month if you want to play seriously)
-Takes about 5 minutes to download start playing(You download as you go along)
-A change from WoW. If you're just a tad bit bored of WoW as I was, especially with the expansion a couple months away it's a nice change of scenery, graphics, lore, ect.
-A main focus on PvE (they have battlegrounds but no one even does them on my server, it's mostly just PvE content which some people prefer)
-A variety of different races such as frog people, kitty people =^-^=, all kinds of elves, fairies and orges(although you have to pay to unlock most of them)
-A variety of different classes such as bards, clerics, monks, shadowknights, enchanters, 3 different kinds of rogues(although again most need payment to unlock)
-Player housing done right. Cheap, useful, and fun to decorate! (mostly a girl thing but I like it too! :D)
-Guild housing. Useful for crafting, ports, banking and auctionhousing
-Simple dps rotations for most classes. Similar to old style ret paladins, most classes have a "first come, first serve" dps rotation making it pretty simple to dps to your fullest. At least in my opinion. And simple is good IMO! at least for some people.
-Competitive graphics. Arguably the same or better than WoW. Although thats not saying much. This game is older than WoW though so yeah
-Pretty fast leveling and quest based
-Built in Questhelper although it goes away at around 30. But you can always download EQ2Map that helps you with quests after that.
-Appearance slots. Don't like your armor set and like another? Well you can just put the one you want to see in your corresponding appearance slot. Aion had this but failed hard at this by making it cost money and destroyed the appearance item
-The mentor system. Lets you help your friends level if your friend is too low level. Essentially takes you down to their level and scales your gear down. Executed really well, your friend gets bonus exp you get a little exp and you're slightly more powerful then you should be.

Anyway hit me up in game if you decide to try it out or if you already play. My name is Desmon and I'm on freeport server (the only free to play server).

As of now, I'm only level 45, leveling has not been a grind at all.............just questing, instances, and fun content

I would even venture to say it's been easier to level than WoW (excluding RAF leveling)

In related news: For those looking for a break from wow, Lord of the Rings Online is also free to play, with some weird pay for things scheme seen here: http://www.lotro.com/free.php?

Also Anarchy Online is free to play forever with the base game + first expansion, and it's $5 a month to add on the second expansion, $15 a month for all expansions. It's also pretty much the best MMO ever.

I'll have to check out EQ2 if I get bored sometime.

I'm pretty sure Pirates of the Burning Sea is going FTP as well. I know for sure that DDO did a while ago.

Edit: I've actually been bored out of my skull, the only MMO I've been playin is Planetside, Older than dirt MMOFPS. I tried out Global Agenda, but it just seemed like a shitty ass version of tf2. I might hit you up in eq2 Tad :D

Planetside is STILL going? Its at 1 server now, I assume? I played PS BEFORE I played DDO, which I played before WoW, which I started playing in late-ish Vanilla, so its incredibly ancient. Hell, I made CR5 before BFRs were introduced, and I was so excited I actually chipped a tooth celebrating. Mrs Wrath couldn't decide if she should be sympathetic, amused, or dismayed at the whole thing.

I know Azure Twilight is still around because I get mass e-mails from them periodically. DARK isn't still an outfit, is it?

I'm not sure, what Faction would DARK have been? I play VS, I'm in the Ghosts of the Revolution outfit which apparently has been around since the start of the game. PS is like my fall back MMO, if nothin else keeps my interest PS is always fun. I think PS has a US server and a Europe server, but there's still enough people around to have big ass battles. My only complaint with that game is the only one I ever had. Sitting waiting for a Base to flip after it's been hacked is BOOOORING if it's not contested. I'm in the Armor squad of my outfit, we end up doing laps around the base in our Mags. So I guess I should say almost always fun :)

DDO I played when it came out, it didn't really hook me tho. I wasn't a fan of 3rd ed to start with so naturally making it into an MMO made mE :\. I mean srsly, I can only cast my spells once or twice? Fuck that.

I've Tried eQ2 a few times as well, I have a soft spot for Necromancers in any MMO. Dark Age of Camelot had the most interesting take on the Necromancer, when you summoned your pet you turned into an Untargetable shade and all your spells and such casted through your pet. I think what annoyed me about EQ2 was having to Find my spells, then upgrade them and shit like that. I already have to find Weapons/Armor/Consumables, but I have to find my damn abilities as well? But then again I think eq2 had a Waypoint system that reminded me of the tentacle things from Donnie Darko.

DARK was VS as well, and, yeah, Ghosts of the Revolution has been around FOREVER. Go team purple. I was one of those stupid anti-armor infantry guys who always had like 5 decimators. Proudest moments were once shooting down a mossie with a sweeper, and finishing off a solo of a BFR with my pistol because it was better than trying to knife it to death.

Yeah, waiting for hacked bases to flip was the kind of amazingly tedious thing that was hated years ago when the MMO options weren't nearly as good. I have no idea why people put up with it now. It gave great opportunities for last ditch heroic efforts, though. Favorite leadership moment was leading a 2-Gal platoon drop on the backdoor of a tech plant, hitting the ground less than 40 seconds before it capped and managing to save it.

I really liked DDO as well, though. Played a paladin. DDO used a mana system for spell casting, so once you got up a couple levels you could cast decently.

I think I've seen DARK around still. The name sounds familiar at least. I would have loved to see you put down the BFR with a pistol, I'da lol'd. I could see you as a CR5 as well. I had some fun with the Deci a week or two ago, TR had dropped a base with 3 maxes and 3 infantry, knocked out the gen and were camping the room. Came runnin with me and 2 other people not knowing what was in there (I just rolled up in the base to repair/reload my Mag and was like WTF GEN DOWN?!), all I had was a bunch of Decis. Two dudes in front of me got wasted, they took out 1 infantry. I took out the rest with Decis :D The TR Maxes were TARDED and just sat there with the anchors deployed so they were sitting ducks. I picked off the Infantry with decis while they were trying to rezz eachother. I love armor tho, I get to see a lot more of the flow of the battle when I'm mobile like that. Infantry gets more tunnel visioned into one part of the front while I get to see the whole thing and can poke at places where they're not paying attention. YaY Flanking! And the juicy AMS kills :D

Maybe I just didn't get far enough into DDO to see where it got better. I did lose interest pretty quickly before I could really get far into the game. It's FTP now tho, so nothin stoppin me from goin and checkin it out. But eq2 has necros...

Edit: Lulsy thing to mention, I made this post while I was waiting for the last NC base on the continent to flip :) They had completely left, 0% pop.

If you do see someone from DARK floating around, tell them that "CrusherMcGee" says hi. I checked in a couple years ago and amazingly there were still a bunch of the same people. Folks who had been in High School when I played with them were employed college grads. Was weird but nice.

Its a nice feeling to completely break an enemy like that :).

All spells you now auto receive when you level. However you still have to upgrade them. It's really cheap to just buy an upgrade although the good upgrades(which are completely optional) are not available to free players and are pretty expensive. Again I never upgrade my spells to the max because you just end up getting a new version of the spell anyway.

I saw someone from DARK like Yesterday. I forgot who it was and at the time I forgot what handle you went by so I was like "SHIT"

WHAT?!?! You haven't memorized the name of a character I used to have in an MMO I haven't played seriously in years? WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH YOU?

Its almost like you have things going on in your life besides me.

Champions On-line actually happened? Wow, I saw that it was in development, but totally missed the launch. I was playing Champions paper and pencil before most of this guild was born. Wonder how different it is now. Building a character around an OAF multi-pool probably got nerfed for its OP-ness like 15 years ago but it was fun long, long ago.

I don't think it's going FTP till start of next year, but you'll have a chance to give it a go :)

It had a shitty launch if I recall properly, but that was a while ago
