Since we're on the topic of Chernobyl, one of the most interesting things I've read lately is that the "dead zone" around Chernobyl is, purely by accident, one of the lushest, most densely inhabited nature preserves in the world. The animals learned VERY quickly where the serious radiation zones were and avoid them without too much trouble. Turns out living at the site of the world's worst nuclear accident is far less harmful to most plants and animals than living in close proximity to human beings.
