I take my dps fairly seriously despite being a tank, and generally go over the logs afterwards whether I'm tanking or dpsing to see what I can do better. Thebrian and Risika and I were generally in the same ballpark, though it felt like I was generally losing GCDs compared to them in fights and Shivaz even more so (was gonna put out something on what makes Shivaz good today, but time got away from me. Maybe next week). I've come to the conclusion that while I need to work on a number of things, one of those things is that I'm simply not mashing my keys fast enough, probably because I'm old and possibly because I'm drinking the wrong beer (I have a exhaustive study planned).

So, since I live in NYC, there's an obvious long-term solution: have Sobe train a monkey to play for me. Shorter term, however, I need a stop-gap measure. People are telling me that a G15 keyboard can be programmed to do things like make macros to repeatedly hit keys quickly, etc and it isn't a terms of service violation (unlike using it to create mini-bots, which will get you banned). So, anyone else currently using or have experience with such a creature? I'm intrigued.

You kids and your "macro's" and your "click casting" and "hotkeys" are way good for me to keep up.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I use AutoHotKey - http://www.autohotkey.com/

You can create a script to hold down the key and it'll spam for you, same as the G15, but free instead of whatever it costs nowadays. That's why you see me type in 22222222222 in chat every once in a while.

Comes with the same warning as the G15, blizz technically has the right to ban you, but it's unlikely they will. Kimi and I had a heated argument about this back in the day, I won obviously.

Here's some sample code that spams 2:

#ifWinActive World of Warcraft
{
$2::
   Loop
   {
	if not GetKeyState("2", "P")
  	break
	Send 2
	sleep 0
	}
return
}

Wrath already mentioned his age in his app.

The one drawback of AHK is that if you hold it down for too long you can easily cast an extra spell when you mean to switch. For greater control you could always bind your most used button to your mouse wheel.

Actually, I didn't. Well, I gave a range rather than a specific number. I'm admittedly older than Len and there's a picture of me so you could look at that and ponder.

The answer to your question is: almost, but not quite.

Sobe, that's pretty much what I was looking for, thanks. Now I just have to figure that out...

Well Len's 36 and you said late 30s, so it's not quite like guessing the number of jelly beans in a jar.

It's fairly straightforward:

  • Download program
  • Create AHK script file
  • Copypasta code a couple of times, changing variables for the buttons you want to mash
  • Double click script file
  • Winnar

Here's the old thread on EJ - http://elitistjerks....ohotkey_thread/

It never quite caught on with the raiding masses, I'm guessing it wasn't really publicized because of the whole "bannable offense" thing. I've been using it for raiding since late 2007 (go go chain heal spam) and never had any issues with it, but ymmv.

A post from Gurgthock that echoes my sentiment about the whole thing:

Quote

It's one of those things that's hard for me to wrap my head around. I mean, I'm a healer. I have a G15 keyboard but I have zero macros for it -- I own the keyboard for the LCD display to see exactly who's talking on vent and when I get tells/queue while alt-tabbed, and my "G keys" do things like make WMP or Windows Calculator open. This rule doesn't affect me at all. And I generally follow Blizzard's rules/ToU fully, and I don't want to get into a position of advocating for something that Blizzard says is illegal, but it's hard for me to swallow such a thin distinction.

Spamming 2 really hard, many times a second: Legal
Spinning your mousewheel to generate lots of inputs per second: Legal
Holding down 2, sparing yourself carpal tunnel, to generate lots of inputs per second: Not legal?

Basically, I understand the reason for the policy. If they say you can use AHK or G15 or whatever to make holding down a key cause multiple keypresses, then they've just allowed scripted AFKing. Make your spacebar repeat, put a roll of coins on it, and walk away, to use the simplest example. And if they punished someone for it, that person could just say "wtf, you guys said it was legal to have repeater keys...." So I see why they have the policy.

I still feel like the reasonable thing to do is to follow the spirit of the rule. If they allow the software (and they have to, unless they want to ban people who have Logitech's keyboard drivers running, which would be a terrible idea) then I don't see how they could possibly ever detect someone who holds down 2 vs. someone who mashes 2 really quickly (assuming you have a Sleep interval built in and aren't generating thousands of events per second or something).

Got it configured last night (which proved to be simple but require a fair bit of tweaking with the keybinds I had been using) and it worked extremely well. Because of my early departure I didn't get a chance to really test out the impact (Sorry for the afks and sudden departure, btw. Turns out, the Wrathettes weren't unusually cranky and troublesome last night after all. In fact they had the stomach flu. Was a very messy night.) but from the little I played with it I was very pleased. Thanks for the suggestion.

Sobie, in honor of your new sig, here's a link to a fun article on just how improbable the series of events leading up to the playoffs was for Boston. Plus, there's never a bad time to read anything by Nate Silver.

Well that and just the timing of how everything played out. I was paying attention to the scoreboard during the raid and saw it go from 7-0 Yanks to 7-6 (one of the reasons I didn't want to bother with clearing trash to Rhyo).

Sox had the lead 3-2, then went into a rain delay (forcing all the Red Sox fans to flip the channel to see the Rays drop 6 runs in the bottom of the 7th). Johnson (.108 hitter lol) hit the homer with 2 strikes and 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th to tie it up at 7.

Rain delay ends right after the homer, play a few tense innings (Red Sox not scoring with runners on 3rd, Yankees doing the same) to make the Sox fans build up the anticipation.

Papsmear gets 2 strikes and 2 outs on Reimold (who the fuck are these guys, seriously), gives up the double. Crawford drops the catchable ball by Andino (another no-name player that killed the Sox). Everyone flips over to the Yankees game just in time to see Longoria hit the walkoff.

Talk about getting kicked in the nuts.

I was reading through the Sons of Sam Horn Red Sox forum with great delight yesterday, you can just see it unraveling through the eyes of Sox fans:

Bottom of the 7th when Longoria hits the 3 run shot (with 2 outs, of course): http://sonsofsamhorn.../page__st__3020

Bottom of the 9th when Johnson ties it: http://sonsofsamhorn.../page__st__3320

Bottom of the 9th for Orioles, leading into Longoria's walkoff: http://sonsofsamhorn.../page__st__4240

I don't even mind if the Yanks don't win the series this year now, this gave me more joy than another championship ever could.

Oh yeah, and this is just the cherry on top:

Yeah, Silver has charts on the probability of each team winning at various points through the game, plate appearance by plate appearance (though not pitch by pitch so if anything it understates things) and at one point the Rays had a 0.3% chance of coming back.

Wow, the Sons of Sam Horn are still around? I was an immense baseball fan back before I had kids, and I had a friend (also a big baseball fan and went to college in Boston) who used to refer to them all the time (and this was when you were like 10).

It would have helped if the Yankees weren't pitching what looked to be the bat boy in the last 3 innings.

It was funny how the broadcaster made it sound like the O's had won the world series at the end of the sox game, I was listening to it going...geez I guess they are really happy they got that 53rd win.

Complain enough about the Yankees buying their championships, turn around and do the same last off season? In the end I think the redsox got what they deserve.

Lackey's contract makes me feel better about Burnett's. At least Burnett didn't divorce his wife after she got cancer (the Newt!) or bitch at his teammates.
