Nerubians are generally thought of as spider-people, yes.

From Wow Wiki:

Quote

Anub'Arak is a Crypt Lord.
Crypt lords are undead nerubian spiderlords ... Crypt lords are a different variety of the standard undead nerubian in that they resemble beetles rather than spiders and are former nerubian spiderlords. This implies that they are a separate subspecies. This theory is supported by the many different subspecies of the qiraji, cousins of the nerubians.( http://www.wowwiki.com/Crypt_lord )

[Nerubian Spiderlords] look somewhat different than their brethren: they have a carapace and dual sets of wings, making their lower bodies appear almost beetle-like. This enormous, insectile creature resembles a gigantic, fantastically colored beetle. The scarab-like carapace unfolds like dual wings, and the creature’s front limbs are scythelike and bony.

So... They're spiderlords who resemble beetles. Great help there Wow Wiki.

Clearly someone didn't actually read the wowwiki article. It specifically talks about how the Nerubians have apparently evolved from an insect-like 6-legged form to an 8-legged spider-like form. I don't particularly consider wowwiki to be cannon, but perhaps Arub-"the noob"-Arak is just a relatively unevolved Nerubian, or maybe the Crypt Lords weren't the ones evolving.

From what wowwiki was saying the spiderlords (and thus those who became crypt lords) were a sort of ruling class that were generally more beetle-y than the rest of the Nerubians. So perhaps as a ruling class they didn't evolve into the spider-like Nerubians.

Bigger question is why does he have wings when all he does is burrow into the ground?

Maybe they're like penguin wings and made more for "swimming" underground than for flying?

I dunno, he sure likes to flutter them in a queer way when he's just standing around. And the wings are still under his carapace so a lot of gunk would get trapped in between if he used them underground.

as spider lords they've likely aquired their station through some kind of hierarchy, in the wiki it talks about them being 'quite' old, in wow terms who knows how many thousands of years that could've been.

who knows, maybe anub arack is like illidan, maybe all the spider lords are like that.

living beings dont necessarily evolve, but rather their speices does through its children.

thats how nerubians looked around the times when they were more in line with the Qiraji and the majority of the nerubians you see today are their more recent, younger and of course more evolved fellows.

The majority of nerubians you see now are dead, the lich king killed them all because they're immune to the plague while they're alive.
