I know people were talking about this in vent the other day. Robert Jordan passed away before finishing the 12th novel in his Wheel of Time series. Brandon Sanderson was chosen to write the novel. Well, today, Tor made an announcement:

For those that don't want to read the long post:

The 12th novel is going to be released in 3 volumes, the first volumes is "The Gathering Storm", scheduled to go on sale November 3rd, 2009.
There will be a JordanCon located in Alpharetta, GA where Harriet, Brandon, and Tom Doherty will be there to answer questions and meet fans.
In May, they will be releasing a WoT comic book series. Sept is the date for the New Spring comic book.
Universal Pictures acquired the movie rights to The Wheel of Time in August 2008, and currently plan to adapt The Eye of the World as the first movie.

This series has consumed my last six months of reading time, so I'm very excited by all this news.

Why am I just not surprised by this? This is the series that never ends...

How far along are you? My enjoyment of that series peaked at book 5, then went steadily downhill. It led to my vow to not pick up a series unless all the books have been published. Life is too short.

Then I got screwed by G.R.R. Martin. Ass.

I loved it up until around 5, then it was OK, but i kept reading hoping for the conclusion, I was sooooo pissy when he passed away and sorta felt selfish lol, I'm glad to see that they will be released soonish so that i can feed my neediness!!

And Shepard's we shall be
For Thee, my lord for Thee.
Power hath descended forth from Thy hand
Our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command
So we shall flow on a river forth to thee
And teeming with souls shall it forever be.

Book 10, bi-atch! Mostly from the fact that once I pick up a series I'm engrossed in, I can't drop it. There are many slow points throughout the story that could be left out, but I like reading about politics and stuff (that most people find boring). Still, I'm glad I picked it up when the series was almost over. If I picked it up about 2 years ago, I probably would have dropped it by now.

You realize that they just said that they would be releasing it as a trilogy? that means that we won't see the end for at least 3 more years.

Robert Jordan started the first book as a trilogy. Think on that...

I'm not happy.

Heinlein did the same damn thing. His books weren't even a series, but you came to find out later that all of the characters were connected and almost all of them are in the last 3-4 books. Then the fucker dies before finishing the last book. My editions of Heinlein's work go back to 1954. I never got into The Wheel of Time Series though.

What was creepy with Heinlein is that his characters aged with him, and they were still having sex with teenagers. He was the ultimate in dirty old men writers, until Piers Anthony decided that he needed to take the title.

Don't do it... There's 12 books out at least, and if there's only 3 more, I'll be shocked.

FYI, I read the first one when it came out, back in 1990. This series really soured my taste for long fantasy novels.

I've enjoyed the series so far. Granted, there's slow spots and alot of useless information that he throws in, but its just very complicated. Instead of writing it from one view, he writes from many views to connect a huge picture of how the world is currently operating.

And yes, I do know the series will be another two or three years before its finished. But it won't be the first series that I've started that I've had to wait for each new release. And I don't mind if the last book is being divided, because wasn't the 12th novel actually supposed to be two seperate novels? So it was supposed to be a 13 book series instead of a twelve book series.

My advice is to read it if you have a GIANT block of time to read it in. Once you start reading the series, you can't really drop it for a long period of time because of how many characters and subplots are in the story. You'll forget them.

Speaking of fantasy novels, I need to start on another series once I'm finished with this one. Any suggestions?

It amazes me to no end his series is continuing from beyond the grave and George RR Martin cant get a fucking book out in a remotely timely manner. Best fantasy series every written next to Tolkein and the auther is gonna be dead to old age before it finishes..

GRRM was getting flamed by some "fans" for actually enjoying life instead of devoting his every waking moment to finishing the series before he dies.

Sort of counter-productive, IMO.

Song of Ice & Fire is probably the single best fantasy series written in the past 20 years, I believe, but people need to get a grip.
